About Me
DJ Wah-Heed was born in Brooklyn, NY and has been immersed in music since childhood. Influenced by his late Caribbean parents’ deep love of music, his early exposure ranged widely—World Beat, Funk, Gospel, Jazz, R&B, Motown, Rock, Reggae, Soca, and classic Oldies. In 1979, after hearing King Tim III (of the Fatback Band) perform at Brooklyn’s Labor Day Parade, Hip-Hop captured his imagination and quickly became part of the family record collection.
With no DJs around to learn from, Wah-Heed taught himself how to scratch 45s in 1980 and began learning the art of DJing in 1984. After convincing his father to buy turntables for Christmas, he spent countless after-school hours mastering techniques inspired by pioneers such as Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa, Kool Herc, Grandwizard Theodore, Grandmixer DXT, Marley Marl, Red Alert, Chuck Chillout, Mix Master Ice, and many others.

By 1985, Wah-Heed was already DJing parties, and by the late ’80s and early ’90s he expanded into music production as a creative outlet. He has competed in numerous DJ battles, earning major accolades including:
-
1999 Mars Music Spin-Off Champion (Catonsville, MD)
-
1st Place – 2003 Baltimore Guitar Center Spin-Off
-
Top 10 Finalist – DMC DJ Championships (2003 D.C. Regionals, 2005 Baltimore Regionals)
In recent years, Wah-Heed has focused on connecting with diverse audiences as an open-format DJ, seamlessly blending genres and generations. His notable appearances include serving as DJ for a VIP party honoring the legendary Harry Belafonte, and opening on the main stage at both the 2009 and 2013 Inaugural Peace Balls in Washington, D.C. He has also opened for acclaimed artists such as Sweet Honey In The Rock, Sahel, and Yasin Bey (f.k.a. Mos Def).
Beyond live performances, Wah-Heed is deeply involved in music education and broadcasting. He is the co-host of Party, Life & Music Radio on blis.fm, airing every Tuesday from 6–7 PM (EST), and a music contributor to On the Ground, which airs Fridays from 11 AM–12 PM on WPFW 89.3 FM in Washington, D.C. He also serves as a DJ instructor at Bach 2 Rock Music School in Fairfax, VA, offering private lessons through the school.
